A stone lion statue sits above the front entrance, it reminded Brigham Young of a similar statue at an affluent home in Vermont that he'd seen in his youth. Known as the "Lion of the Lord," Brigham Young was the prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and known for his tenacity and power of speech.

Mormon Pioneer Cabin on Salt Lake City Tour
This Is The Place Heritage Park features the John Gardiner cabin near the entrance of Deseret Village. Built in Pleasant Grove, Utah, in 1864 and relocated to the park in 1979, the one-room cabin is 13 by 22 feet and was occupied by ten children. The Gardiner family came to Utah in 1864, traveling through Nebraska and Wyoming with the John D. Chase Company.

Historic Mormon Pioneer Chapel - Salt Lake City Tours
A replica of the Pine Valley Chapel stands in the pioneer history village at This Is The Place Park in Salt Lake City. The original was built in 1868 in Pine Valley, near St. George, Utah, by a Scottish convert to the Mormon church. Ebenezer Bryce. Bryce was shipbuilder and using traditional shipbuilding techniques he crafted the log walls on the ground before raising them into place and building the attic as a ship's hull turned upside down. Meetinghouses like this one were used for several purposes beyond worship services, such as for theatrical productions, political meetings, social events, and as a school classroom.

Mormon Heritage Pioneer Village - Salt Lake City Tours
Overlooking This Is The Place Monument is a pioneer replica village that commemorates the arrival of the Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley. Old Deseret Village is comprised of replica and authentic pioneer homes and buildings from various locations around Utah. Volunteers dressed in pioneer clothing act as interpreters to bring pioneer history to life as you walk the dusty streets of this 440 acre property. Historic buildings are arranged as they were in a real pioneer town, with dirt roads and board sidewalks.
Pictured above is the Andrus Halfway House and Farm. It served as an inn where Lucy Loomis Tuttle, the third wife of Milo Andrus, and her family provided food and lodging for travelers. Called a "halfway house" because of its location between two rest stops.

Christus statue - Salt Lake City Tours
An 11-foot replica of the Christus statute stands in the North Visitors Center on Temple Square. The original statue was commissioned by the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, created by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1821. An American textbook proclaimed it to be the most perfect statue of Christ in the world. The replica on Temple Square conveys to visitors that Mormons are Christians. The mural of the universe provides an impressive backdrop.

Temple Square Church Museum of History and Art - Salt Lake City Tours
The LDS Church History Museum on Temple Square features artifacts from the beginning of Church history to the present day, as well as religious art. Open seven days a week and free to the public, this is one of the top visitor attractions in Salt Lake City with over a quarter of a million annual visitors. Located next to the LDS Family History Library, the Church History Museum includes a bookstore where visitors can find albums of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Tabernacle organ. Self-guided audio tours or docent-led tours are available at the front desk. Hours are weekdays from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, weekends from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

LDS Conference Center - Salt Lake City Tours
The LDS Conference Center across from Temple Square is one of the largest religious auditoriums in the world. Seating capacity in the main auditorium is 21,000. The Conference Center is used for large meetings, Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsals and concerts during the peak visitor seasons, and for theatrical productions. Made of the same stone from the same location as the Salt Lake Temple across the street, the Conference Center was completed in 2000. Open daily for guided tours both inside the building as well as on the roof, where a large garden was placed to absorb sunlight and help keep the building cooler in the summer. Thursday evening is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsal, with doors typically opening to the public at 7:30 PM. Sunday morning is the Choir's concert, Music and the Spoken Word, with doors opening at 8:25 AM and the 30-minute broadcast beginning at 9:30 AM. Many days of the summer, the Conference Center offers a 2:00 PM organ recital open to the public.

Pioneer Log Cabin - Salt Lake City Tours
One of the fun things to do in Salt Lake City for tourists is to visit the old pioneer building and homes. This original pioneer log home was built in 1847, the year the Mormons first arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Occupied by a blacksmith named Osmyn, his wife, Mary Deuel, and Osmyn's brother. The pioneer log home is 15 feet wide and 20 feet long, made of Douglas fir and lodgepole pine from the mountains east of Salt Lake City. It is one of only two surviving log homes from 1847.
